Artist Statement

I am a visual artist who creates art intuitively as a method of expression. My fluid non-objective paintings are inspired by patterns in nature and ambiguity. I am fascinated with working on the edge, by embracing lack of control. My work is a visual metaphor for the chaos in one's life, no matter how carefully planned. Similarly I see in nature, what seems solid and concrete is often altered and influenced by other forces in the environment. In this place of change is where revelations and insights affect creativeness and transformation. Working with acrylic paint and ink on canvas or paper I allow the paint or ink to 'do its own thing' layer upon layer, creating organic forms. The bold, and energetic paintings are a synergistic process of letting go, then transforming the spontaneous gestural abstractions into images of significance. I love the compelling process of bringing the uninhibited and undefined into physical form. I construct boxes that are made from my flowing conceptual paintings on paper to juxtapose the non-objective with linear geometric shapes. The boxes appear structurally strong but are extremely vulnerable due to the medium of paper from which they are constructed. I am compelled to make work that exemplifies the fragility and tenuousness of life, both personal and in the environment.
