Hello and welcome to my page, I am a Visual Artist

Jane Rowlands is a Canadian artist located in Vancouver, B.C. Canada living and creating on the ancestral unceded territories of the xwməθkwəýəm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) and səĺilwətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) nations and the Métis people who call this area home. With over four decades of experience working as a visual artist, she has established herself with her expressive representational work. Her artistic voice can be found in the interplay of light and shadow woven together in fluid brushstrokes creating a sense of depth, motion and emotion. Rooted in her drawing background, her linear brushstrokes echo her artistic origins, while her compositions tell captivating stories, supported by a structure of underlying layers of colour — a testament to her graphic design background. Embracing a multidisciplinary approach, Rowlands leverages her graphic design expertise to craft compositions that guide viewers through the canvas, leading them away and back in a layering of images. By employing strong design principles, she achieves balance and movement. Working primarily in oils allows her to create layers that incorporate transparency and depth through a series of glazes.

Artist Statement

Creating art has always been at the core of my life. I am currently in the process of diving back to my fine art roots after decades working as a graphic designer, illustrator and medical illustrator. I believe that the hands-on experience of creating and immersing yourself in art teaches and explains the world at a much deeper level than simple observation - indeed, the process of actively creating brings a depth of thought that builds to that magical ‘Aha!’ moment. Everyone should have the opportunity to engage in the creative process to build, to draw, to paint, to sculpt in order to truly participate in, be inspired and enriched by the world around us. All art is valid, from the lighthearted to deeper explorations and I believe that the need to create is universal. My current pieces are about play and the joy of summertime moments - snapshots of time from summers past when responsibility revolved around being home on time for dinner and bucolic summers filled the time between school years. I love drawing attention to the wonders of nature and the human form from unexpected angles, with light and colour to provoke curiosity and inspire to see the beauty and joy in the everyday.
